This is an infinite sum of a geometric series problem.
Downs: 8 + 4 + 2 + ... = Sum 8(.5)^n = 8/(1-0.5) = 16 meters.
Ups: 4 + 2 + 1 + ... = Sum 4(0.5)^n = 4/(1-0.5) = 8 meters.
Hence the total travel is 22 meters.
