What is the function of the vitellus in the vertebrate egg? How are these eggs classified according ..

Answer / Sewika Kumari

The vitellus, also known as yolk, is a nutrient-rich substance found inside vertebrate eggs. Its primary function is to provide the developing embryo with necessary food until it can start consuming its own food. Vertebrate eggs are classified into two main categories based on the amount of vitellus: amniote eggs (reptiles, birds, and mammals) have a small yolk mass, while anamniote eggs (fish and amphibians) contain large amounts of yolk. Amniotes have developed a placenta for additional nutrient supply during embryonic development.
