ISDN is stands for Integrated Services Digital Network. An
emerging technology which is beginning to be offered by the
telephone carriers of the world. ISDN combines voice and
digital network services in a single medium making it
possible to offer customers digital data services as well
as voice connections through a single "wire." The standards
that define ISDN are specified by CCITT. ISDN offers
extended services compared to PSTN. ISDN lines contain two
channels: a B channel, which has a 64Kbps (kilobits per
second) data transmission rate, and a D channel, which has
either a 16Kbps or 64Kbps transmission rate. When the two
lines are used together, transmitted data can travel at
128Kbps. Compare ISDN and T-1, T-3 lines .
