What were 'uglies'?
Answer / guest
'Uglies' were a straw hat fashion of bonnets with brims
with projecting frames of cane covered in silk. They were
used to shield a woman's face from the sun. As sunbathing
did not become fashionable until the 1920s ladies used hats
and parasols to protect their white skin from the sun's
harmful rays.
