Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) latest version 3.0
SP2 is for updating Microsoft windows software like Windows
OS, MS office, MS Exchange etc.
Every software requires update from time to time to work
and function in day to day environment. Microsoft releases
patches and update file for all its software every months
(some times every weeks) In a vast spread environment every
or in a security network every windows server or windows
client can not go to Microsoft web site to get updated.
Here WSUS server comes.
Let's take an example, There is a big co. having 500
clients and requires same patch to be updated, now if each
machine reach to Microsoft update web site and download the
patch it takes lots of time, data transfer over inter net
and administration (each client should be updated) now to
resolve this issue co. put a WSUS server and install WSUS
service on this server also administrator of the Co make a
computer group of his co. networked client 500 computer.
All updated software and patched are downloaded to this
server the all the client which are associated to the
server take update patch from this WSUS server.
Here the 500 client computer group which i have discussed
above is through GPO.
Hope this helps

http://*.update.microsoft.com
https://*.update.microsoft.com
http://*.windowsupdate.com
http://download.windowsupdate.com
http://download.microsoft.com
http://*.download.windowsupdate.com
http://wustat.windows.com
http://ntservicepack.microsoft.com
On WSUS 3.2 and earlier, port 80 for HTTP and 443 for HTTPS
On WSUS 6.2 and later (at least Windows Server 2012), port 8530 for HTTP and 8531 for HTTPS
he firewall on the WSUS server must be configured to allow inbound traffic on these ports.
