Monozygotic (identical) twins occur when a single fertilized egg divides into two identical cells. This splitting can happen at different stages, causing fraternal (dizygotic) or identical twins. In contrast, dizygotic twins result from the fertilization of two separate eggs by two sperm cells, leading to non-identical offspring.
