The pericardium is a fibrous sac that surrounds and protects the heart in mammals. It consists of two layers: an outer fibrous layer (parietal pericardium) and an inner serous layer (visceral pericardium). The space between these two layers contains a small amount of fluid called pericardial fluid, which lubricates the movement of the heart during contractions.
