A ledger is a record of financial transactions. In the context of blockchain, a distributed ledger (or blockchain) is a database maintained collectively by a network of computers, where each participant has access to the same data. A common type of ledger used in public blockchains like Bitcoin and Ethereum is a Merkle tree based ledger.
