The Central Limit Theorem states that the distribution of the sum (or average) of a large number of independent, identically distributed random variables will be approximately normally distributed, regardless of the shape of the individual distributions. An example is the following: If we take 100 samples, each of size 10, from a population with mean 50 and standard deviation 10 (following a normal distribution), then the sum of these samples will be approximately normally distributed with a mean of 500 and a standard deviation of sqrt(10) * 10 = 30.
