Skewness is a measure of the symmetry of a probability distribution. A normal distribution is symmetric, so it has zero skewness. If the left tail of the distribution is longer than the right tail (positive skew), the distribution is skewed to the right, and the median is less than the mean. Conversely, if the right tail is longer than the left tail (negative skew), the distribution is skewed to the left, and the median is greater than the mean.
