Plasmalogens are identical to phospholipids EXCEPT the
fatty acid at C1 is linked as an ether, rather than an
ester bond. Figure 18.3. They serve important roles in
myelin (surrounding nerves) and heart muscle. Platelet
activating factor (PAF) is a plasmalogen that activates
platelet aggregation (blood clotting).
