An abstract class in Java is a class that cannot be instantiated and must be subclassed by other classes. Its primary purpose is to provide a common base for multiple related classes, sharing their properties and behaviors while allowing each derived class to define its own specific implementation of certain methods. Abstract classes can contain both concrete and abstract (i.e., unimplemented) methods, with the intention that derived classes will complete the implementation.
