Cassandra was initially developed by a company called 'Facebook' in 2007 under the codename 'Gossip-based distributed log store'. Later, it was donated to the Apache Software Foundation and became an open-source project in 2008. It was renamed as 'Apache Cassandra'. In 2010, Twitter also adopted Cassandra for its data storage needs.
