The two major pieces in the Windows operating structure are the Kernel and the User-Mode Environment. The Kernel, also known as the Executive, is a collection of essential services that manage system resources, such as memory, I/O, and process scheduling. The User-Mode Environment includes applications, system services, drivers, and the graphical user interface (GUI), which run on top of the Kernel.
