The maxillae are a pair of appendages located near the mouth in arthropods, and are used for food manipulation and biting. The maxillulae, on the other hand, are small, secondary mouthparts located near the maxillae. They are typically used for fine manipulation of food and for sensing food chemicals. In most arthropods, the maxillae are larger and more complex than the maxillulae.
