Why d-block elements are called outer while f-block
elements are called inner transition elements?????????

Answer Posted / muhammad ehsan ullah

F subshell has less shielding effect, so, it is more strongly attracted by nucleas, and it penetrates behind s subshell of (n-2) orbital. Due to the presence of f subshell at penultimate position, f block elements are called inner transition elements.
While,
d subshell is present at valance/ outermost position in d block elements, so, they are also called outer transition elements.
