Fluorescent Tube:-It is an electrical discharge lamp of the hot cathode type. It consists of a hollow cylindrical glass tube provided with two metal rings at the ends. The tube contains argon gas at a very low pressure with a small quantity of mercury.
The inside surface of the tube is coated with a suitable fluorescent material. There is a chock coil and a ‘starter’ switch in the lamp circuit.
When the lamp is switched on an electric discharge in established as a result of a large induced voltage in the choke. This discharge is maintained by the low pressure mercury vapour inside the tube. The light produced by the mercury atoms is rich in blue violet and re-emits it in the form of visible radiations. Hence this light resembles natural daylight very closely . The power intake is 10 watts per foot length.
