It is the transfer of heat from a hot body to a cooler body without appreciably heating the intervening space.
Experimentally it has been proved that
(i)A good radiator is a good absorber and a poor reflector.
(ii)And a bad radiator is a bad absorber and a good reflector
Laws of Radiation
1. The rate of loss of heat by a body radiation process is directly proportional to its difference of temperature over that of its surroundings
2. The amount of heat radiated per second depends upon the are and nature of the radiating surface
3. All bodies at all temperatures radiate heat and also absorb radiated heat from the surrounding
4. Heat radiations obey various light law. They are reflected, refracted, diffused and polarised
Application:
1. White clothes are preferred in summer as white cloth absorbs very little of heat from sun and reflect most of the heat. Coloured cloths are preffered in winter as they absorb most of heat
2. An electric radiators, polished metals are used as they are food reflectors
3. Articles which are required to retain heat are polished from outside so as to have less heat radiations
4. Milk is heated in unglazed earthen vessles in villages to have less heat radiations
