Why dies a piece of iron sink in water, while a ship remains
floating ?

The density of water is 1.Substances with density less than that of water float in it while substances with density more than that of water sink in it.The density of an iron needle is more than 1, so it sinks in water. The density of an iron ship is less than 1, so it floats on water.
