due to some schmucks, who forgot that they had petrol engine and fueled them selves with diesel, that car was fine till the petrol completely emptied and when the diesel kicked in the car was having all types of horrible knocking bumps
this experiment was done by a show "Fifth Gear" and the result was petrol car worked in diesel and diesel car worked in petrol, however the latter case experienced more trouble in driving
to answer your question, yes it is possible to interchange the fuel, but don't expect it to be smooth
