what is difference between design mix and nominal mix,where the design mix is used?

We can say some proportions up to M20 which is called nominal mix..beyond this like M30,M40 we can't define this proportions of cement and aggregates roughly without designing ..it should be designed on the basis of properties of material in such cases..it's called design mix
