Can someone explain how does an IDMT relay works.

Its also called inverse relay. consider disk type induction relay. you set the over current setting 70% means this disk will pickup above this setting.consider if 85% of load going the disk will rotate and trip the circuit. if the load is 110% that time the disk operate very soon then previous case, it trip very quickly.
The operating time inversely proportional to the fault current this type relay called Inverse Definite Minimum Time Lag relay (IDMT)
