Why do we use stirrups in columns?

Answer Posted / vaisakh

There are several reasons. primary reason is that concrete have low unconfined compressive strength and there for the chance for failure due to lateral expansion of concrete (poisson effect) and its failure is more. Stirrups confine this concrete and prevent splitting up of concrete.second important thing is that stirrups prevent steel main rebars from buckling and also holds them together while concreting. third important function is to provide ductility to the column preventing explosive failure.
