what are the advantages by using IGBT in VSC HVDC than
thyristor in conventional HVDC

Answer Posted / jawad

As we know that IGBT can be controlled in both turning on
and turning off conditions, so we can control the switching
frequency during conversion, hence we would make switching
for very small instant and would get a smooth and less noise
sine wave. while in case of thyristor, we can only control
it in "on" condition, so switching would affect and we can't
get desired smooth and less noise sine wave at output.
