we know that
M= wl2/8 ie. B.M. is directly proportional to
load coming on beam.
also from other eqn. M= .87 fy Ast(d-.42xu)
hence to carry coming load along with self wt. beam must be
strong in tension. Since Ast is inversly proportional to
depth of beam lesser the depth of beam more will be required
Ast. For this purpose we use depth greater than width so
that steel requirement will be less hence section will be
economical.
