To me "the term sales means " convincing other party to agree to our idea " it could be a product, idea, proposal, action etc.
In this context, kindly find note the examples:-
(1) A father convincing his kid to go to park instead of
movie is a salesman
(2) A politician addresses to the public making them to vote
for him explaining his candidature is a salesman
(3) A typical salesman showing his product and convinces the
buyer to agree to his (his company's) terms, to buy a
product - is a salesman
(4) A husband convinces his wife to buy a saree instead of
an expensive gold ornament - is a salesman
Marketing means - how to make the public to buy your product.
