Why we use Capacitor in Single
Phase Induction Motor?

Answer Posted / s.raghavendra

Basically to rotate an induction motor there should be some phase difference for the input excitation. For a three phase supply there is a phase shift of 120 degrees for each phase but in case of single phase there is no phase shifting . In order to produce a phase shift in single phase a capacitor is placed because a capacitor leads the current by some phase angle from voltage supplied which is the inherent property of a capacitor to charge and discharge itself , helps in creating a phase difference in single phase supply which starts the motor

I have a drawing of a wound rotor induction motor for a crane. This crane motor has 5 forward speeds & 5 reverse speed implemented of course with different amount of resistance for each speed setting selected. What has got me scratching around is the fact that 8 of the 10 speed selections switch in uneven (unbalanced) amounts of resistances on each of the 3 connections to the motor's rotor. Can this be possible? I would have assumed this would produce unbalanced rotor currents and therefore vibration in the motor. I would greatly appreciate anyone's comments on this. Many thanks, Confused.
