Both HART and BRAIN are digital protocols superimposed on a
4-20 mA signal. The information available ranges from
configuration settings, to process information.
Hardware wise the two protocols are almost identical. The
significant difference is in how they communicate with their
respective hand held terminals. HART hand held terminals
must have device descriptor, (DD) files to make them aware
of the characteristics of each type of HART device that they
communicate with. As new devices come out the hand held
terminal must be updated to make them compatible. There are
basic functions that conform to a generic standard that most
HART devices support, but typically there are other
functions that are not available unless the correct DD file
is installed in the hand held.
BRAIN hand held terminals are a "dumb" terminals. It is up
to the transmitter to know how to talk to the hand held.
Therefor, the hand held never needs to be upgraded as new
devices come out. The transmitter just uses the hand held as
a remote screen and keyboard.
HART is, by far, the most common protocol of the two. It
should be noted that the BRAIN protocol is available almost
exclusively in Yokogawa devices, but HART is still more
popular, even on Yokogawa transmitters. The hand held
terminal that Yokogawa sells, the BT200 is about 1/5 the
cost of a 475 from Rosemount.
