What trouble could result if the main engine is using a low
grade of fuel?
Answer Posted / guest
Low grade fuel means more impurity in the fuel like presence
of lead and sulphur. This could cause early deposition of
sludge, increase viscosity of the sump oil (which reduces
mobility between reciprocating parts ie connecting shaft of
the piston and the main shaft),lower performance like
slowing down of acceleration, decreased mileage(this happens
because the engine automatically compensates for usage of
low quality fuel by consuming more fuel),causes detonation
in engines.
Detonation (generally caused by fuel with a low octane
rating) is the tendency for the fuel to pre-ignite or auto-
ignite in an engine's combustion chamber. This early (before
the spark plug fires) ignition of fuel creates a shock wave
throughout the cylinder as the burning and expanding fuel
air mixture collides with the piston that is still traveling
towards top-dead-center. The resulting knock/ping is the
sound of the pistons slamming against the cylinder walls.
Severe detonation can break pistons and destroy engines.
