we are all know if we apply load on any horizontal members(like beam, slab) it will bend. As a civil engineer we have to resist that bending.
bending moment is the apposing force created by the structure itself. its depends upon size of the member (directly proportional to moment of inertia of that section)and external loading value.
in analysis we are calculating bending moment from loading. this is for to design the element. it actually means the structure should create this much of bending moment to resist the bending. if still in doubt simply contact me...
