if transformer core is made of copper instead of steel which
losses will increase..please explain
Answer Posted / somu0507
The main purpose of iron core is to provide low reluctance path. The copper has much lower permeability(approximately equal to 1) than iron and has comparatively higher conductivity. The following effects will occur if copper is used instead of Iron (for same supply of voltage and frequency):
1-It can be seen from voltage equation of the transformer that if supply voltage and frequency is constant then require flux is constant. to produce same flux, very high magnatising current will be required (as copper has very high reluctance than iron) which will result in VERY HIGH COPPER LOSSES in primary winding. Consequently the primary winding may get burn.
2- As the copper has higher conductivity HIGHER EDDY CURRENT LOSSES will occur.
2- Being a non magnetic material, Copper has very narrow Hysteresis loop, hence HYSTERESIS LOSSES WILL BE LESS.
