With HPLC, components of a solution are separated, and elute
from the column at varying times. One can use the retention
time to estimate what the components are, but can not say
definitively.
With an LC-MS, in addition to components being separated,
the components are then fragmented and the identity of each
component be determined based on the distribution of the
fragments' mass to charge ratios.
In short, LC-MS is qualitative and the HPLC is not.
