What is Backlash in gears.when it will be harmfull?
Answer Posted / mechanicallyloaded
Backlash is the gap that is to be kept between two
meshing tooths of two gears.i.e. it is the gap between the
tooth thickness and tooth space and it is kept to prevent
the jamming of the gears when they are in running condition
because on running the gears will heat up and due to this
the metal expands so the tooth requires some space to
expand which is provided by back lash in the gears.
otherwise the gears will cut each other and there
is a lot of wear and tear and the gears may also get jammed
and seize to rotate.
If you can visualize two gears then you will find that they
have a play between them while in meshing condition this
play is backlash which is generally between 0.1mm to 0.3mm
depending on the material of the gears.
If there is more backlash between gears then while running
the gear tooths will try to slip up of the meshing gears
tooth and there will be more wear and tear as the gears are
hot while running and hot material is softer than its cold
counterpart. There will also be more noise between the
gears if they have more backlash.
