Why Ferranti effect is occoured in leading power factor load
in a overhead transmission line?
Answer Posted / natha
You may draw vector diagram considering the resistance of line
is very small and capacitance and inductance large. In low
load currents the effect of inductive drop is almost nil where
as the capacitive MVAr generation is large. This is because,
the capacitance is in shunt of the line (parallel to line)
where as the inductance is in series with the line. As the
load increases, the VAr iconsumed in the inductive drop. ( I *
XL drop and var consumption is I^2*XL) whereas the the
capacitive effect is constant whether load or no load. Hence,
as the load increases, the inductive drop takes over and as a
result, there is no ferranti effect. (You can draw vector
diagram for low loads and hi loads)
