which type of shaft is preferred for power transmission,
solid or hollow one?

In heavy power transmission hollow shaft is used. For
example in case of gas turbine and steam turbine where you
need to transmit thousand of horse powers from turbine to
generator, the hollow shafts are used because of its
stiffness and mass ratio.
