These quantities are expressed in terms of force per unit
area. In the SI the unit based on the Newton per square
meter (N/m2). Similarly data used in strength-of-materials
calculations (Young’s modulus of elasticity, yield strength
and so on) are all expressed in terms of the Newton. It has
been recommended by the International Standards organization
that the special name for the basic unit for pressure and
stress should be the pascal (pa). This recommendation is
subject to approval by the CGPM. The basic unit N/m2 is very
small, it is only 0.15 x 10 lb/in2, hence the KN/m2 (= 1000
/N/m2) are much more frequently encounters. The latter is
sometimes written as N/mm2. In some countries the bar = 105
N/m2 and hectobar = 107 N/m2 are employed. The safest rule
is to convert to the basic unit before starting any
calculations.
