What are the differences between Genetic Engineering and
breeding?
Answer Posted / suman mohajan
It is true that gene transfers also occur in conventional
plant and animal breeding, but these only take place between
individuals of the same species, or, in some cases, between
closely related species. A rice plant can cross with a
different rice species, but not with a walnut. Genetic
engineering is not bound by these limits. So, for example
the genetically engineered Vitamin A rice contains newly
inserted genes from daffodils, viruses and bacteria. As a
result a new form of life has been created.

Cystic fibrosis (CF) occurs with a frequency of about 1/2500 Caucasian newborns and is inherited as an autosomal recessive. A woman had an older sister die from complications of this disease. CF is not present among relatives of her husband. Both the woman and her husband have normal phenotypes. What is the chance this couple will have a CF child?
Consider two linked autosomal genes. The dominant allele C of the first gene causes cataracts of the eye, whereas its recessive allele produces normal eyes. The dominant allele P causes polydactyly (an extra finger) whereas its allele (p) produces a normal number of fingers. A man with cataracts and normal fingers marries a woman with polydactyly and normal eyes. Their son has both polydactyly and cataracts and he marries a woman with neither trait. What is the probability that their first child will have cataracts and polydactyly?

In hogs a gene that produces a white belt around the animal's body is dominant over its allele for a uniform body. Another independent dominant gene produces fusion of the hoof (syndactyly). Suppose a uniformly colored hog homozygous for syndactyly is mated with a normal footed hog homozygous for the belted character. What would be the phenotype of the F1? If the F1's interbreed, what would be the phenotypic ratio of the F2?

In horses coat color is dependent upon genes as follows: A_B_ results in bay, aaB_ in black, A_bb in chestnut, aabb in liver. In addition, palimino is derived by Dd with chestnut. A palimono stallion (DdAAbb) is crossed with a palimino mare (DdAAbb). What percent of the offspring will be palimino?
