if one company can maintain one customer number for

I think Mayank is correct, but the answer is incomplete. A
sales area is a combination of Sales Org, Dist Channel and
Division. If you have one customer in different sales
areas, then there is no need to create multiple customer
master records for that one customer. You can use the
Common Distribution Channel and/or Common Division feature
of SAP and retain the same customer number. Here you have
to keep one Distribution Channel and one Division as the
reference and subsequent DCs and Divns will only be
assigned this reference DC and reference Divn as Reference
DC and Reference Divn, so that all the customer master data
gets copied into the other sales areas.
The above is true not only for customer master but all
kinds of master data i.e. material and conditions.
