What is meant by coupling constant?
Answer Posted / satheesh g
Coupling constant is denoted by J and the unit is Hz. If we
see the doublet in NMR spectrum, we assume that one peak is
in 2.128 ppm and an another peak is in 2.156 ppm.
First convert the ppm into Hz by multiply the ppm into
fieldstrength in MHz. If Our NMR machine is 300 MHz, the
peaks were at 638.4 Hz and 646.8 Hz. So the coupling
constant is the difference between the two values
i.e.,646.8 - 638.4 gives 8.4 Hz.
