what is the difference between earth and neutral?
Answer Posted / ed
neutral in a balanced system always contains zero current,
hence it is at zero volts, it is the centre point of a 3
phase star system, and as such is a phase wire for any
single phase system run off it, and it is usually
maintained at zero volts. Its function is to collect
current flowing from a higer potential to a lower potential.
The earth wire on the other hand provides a fault path for
fault current to flow to earth, thus activating any
protective devices. In a Tn-c-s sytem, the earth and
neutral are combined, this offering a much lower earth path
in that system because of parallel paths.
