what is the difference between stress and presure althougth
both have same unit.
Answer Posted / shahajhan-cfd analyst
See first of all pressure is one form of the stress and
especially this term is used in fluid mechanics to denote
the force exerted per unit area in a direction normal to the
surface however stress is a wider term equally used in fluid
and solid mechanics in which case it is a tensor quantity
requiring three things for complete description
1.Magnitude
2.Direction
3.Orientation of the surface
now in case of pressure as most people interpret u have
fixed your "orientation of the surface as normal to it"
hence one only talks about its magnitude and direction as
horizontal or vertical pressure as for example a water in a
beaker has downward pressure exerted at bottom due to its
weight and the side walls too need to bear the static
pressure of water in beaker.
I do hope I have made it clear to all of you!
