The question should rather refer to a high quality coal and
not a good coal. The final use of the coal product and the
quality requirements are more important than a pure
classification of a "good" coal or not a "good" coal. A
high quality thermal coal, generally less than 10 per cent
ash yield and minimum 28MJ/kg heat value ( air-dry
reporting base) is not necessarily a high quality
metallurgical coal where other parameters such as the
crucible swell number or roga index should also be taken
into consideration. One should also distinguish between
coal in the ground and beneficiated coal products. Coal is
a highly complex mineral commodity to deal with and a
straight answer to the question is not simple.
