Do you know the overhauling of a motor?

Answer Posted / laxmikant

"¢ Disassemble the fan assembly and remove the motor to the shop for overhaul.

"¢ Disassemble the motors. Thoroughly clean and examine all parts.

"¢ Protect machined surfaces.

"¢ Inspect and dimensionally measure motor components including end bells, frame, shaft, sleeve bearings, keyways, fan and running surfaces for wear, eccentricity and other defects. Submit a condition report with readings and conditions as found.

"¢ Completely strip and clean the armature, field coils and inter-pole coils as applicable.

"¢ Rewind the motor using new wire of the proper size and type as specified by the motor manufacturer or equivalent.

"¢ Perform insulation resistance test, DC High Pot or equal, on newly rewound motor and submit report to owner's engineering representative.

"¢ Replace bearings and grease seals, or sealed bearings as original and lubricate if required.

"¢ Renew all assembly hardware and gaskets on covers and inspection plates

"¢ Reassemble and dynamically balance the rotor and motor assemblies. Owner's on site engineering rep to witness

"¢ Reassemble the motor using new contractor provided; shaft sleeves, gaskets and fasteners, bearings.

"¢ All surfaces of the fan, fan housing and motor frames exterior shall be blasted and painted with two (2) coats of primer and one (1) finish coat

"¢ Upon completion of all repairs, inspection and approval by the owner's engineering rep, return assembly to the ship.

"¢ Reinstall motor assemblies using new fasteners and gaskets as original.

"¢ Reconnect the motor and perform operational test for rotation in presence of owner's engineering representative.

"¢ Test under operational conditions for minimum of one hour after temperatures stabilize. Record current voltage, speed and frame/bearing temperature rise at 15-minute intervals. Submit all reports and prove work satisfactory to the owner's engineering representative.

"¢ All interference's and earlier removals shall be reinstalled.

As the maintenace manager (the "owner's engineering rep" eventually reports to me), I'd like to know if anyone has any suggestions for improving the QA tests in the spec to ensure that we get the motors back in as a "like new" condition as possible. Please include in your responses the reasons why a certain test should be performed. Thanks in advance.

In a power conditoining unit (inverter) of a solar plant when we measure the d.c. current fed by different strings of solar plates to inverter, the current in the negative wire is less almost by 1 ampere to the current in its positive wire say current in positive wire 5 A , then current in negative wire of the same string is 4 A. Since the current entering should be equal to current leaving then why the current is noticably less in negative wire.
