what is the difference between arch dam and gravity dam.
Name a gravity dam in India
Answer Posted / don
The difference is in the load distribution mechanism
employed. Here the load is the force exerted by the water
being stopped in the direction of flow.An arch dam as the
name implies, uses an arc shape built between two sturdy
supports(rocky mountains for eg)and the load is transferred
laterally to the supports.A gravity dam relies on its own
weight to prevent toppling down by the load.Imagine them
like the concrete blocks, the traffic police keeps on roads
to regulate or block traffic in certain directions. They have
a wide base and are heavy weight.
