what is purpose of using reactor in substations.

Answer Posted / arvboy

Electrically, reactor has a property that current cannot
change suddenly across its terminals. Initially, when a
reactor is switched on, it acts as a open circuit to
current. (opposite is the case with capacitor which acts as
a short when switched on or sudden current change occurs)
This principal is employed in substation where two buses
are coupled through a series reactor, when a fault occurs
in one bus/its outgoing feeders, it doesn't get transferred
to another section and meanwhile protection acts to isolate
the faulty area. For the same reasons, two separate
switchyards of same voltage levels are connected through a
reactor tie.

Another use of reactors in substation is to be coupled
alongwith capacitor bank to absorb initial current surge
when capacitor banks are switched on.
Further more, due to their lagging current production, they
are also used in conjuntion with capacitors for voltage
control.
Shunt reactors are used in long lines to counter ferranti
effect.
