why free wheeling diode is connected across inductive load

AS the supply cuts off the current will not become
zero,because there will be some energy stored in inductor.It
will create a reverse current.If the contacts seperate the
back emf will damage the cicuit components. Hence the free
wheeling diode is connected to provide a closed path for the
current until it vanishes.....
