What is the optimal size of a project team, above which
additional members do not contribute productivity equivalent
to the percentage increase in the staff size?
Answer Posted / yeomen
The answer is 3.
Since the number of communication channels in an n person
team is n(n-1)/2, we get the following communication
channels for the given size of the team:
3 people = 3 channels
5 people = 10 channels
7 people = 21 channels
9 people = 36 channels
11 people = 55 channels
As you can see, above a team size of 3, people have to
communicate a lot more thus reducing their productivity.
So, three is the optimal number.
