what is buchholz relay?what is it used for?
Answer Posted / dean bartlett
Every reference that I have seen references the Buchholz
relay to the ANSI/IEEE Device Number (63). This means that
it is related to "pressure". Therefore the Buchholz relay
obviously responds to a "sudden" change in pressure inside
the transformer tank. In the USA we call these "sudden
pressure" relays. It is nothing more than a diaphram that
operates a micro-switch, if the pressure on one side of the
diaphram suddenly changes in reference to the other. It
does not operate if the pressure change is gradual. A
gradual but extreme pressure change would operate
a "pressure relief" device, similar to a "pop-off" device
on an air compressor.
