Why is the earth socket in an electrical plug outlet made
thicker and lenghty?
Answer Posted / mahavir jagdev
There are two answers to this question -
1. In olden times the earth plug was long and thick so that before any appliance get connected to the power, it it earthed and protects the person from shock as most of the equipments were made out of metal. It is thicker as the short circuit current is much more than the normal current the device takes.
2. With the modern three pin pligs the principle is the same but another safety feature has been added that the lower two power points open for insertion of the plug points only after the Earthing point has been insert. Again for safety.
