Suppose a column is of 1mx1m dimension adn load is of barely
1 ton(no moment), will u provide the total minimum steel
reinforcement, if not what will u do..?
Answer Posted / nithinraj n
one thing can be done is to reduce the size of the column. 1
ton means 10kN. To carry 10kN a column of size 230mm X 230mm
is sufficient. If its not possible to change the size of the
column, then its clearly mentioned in the code IS456 that,
for sections which are larger than required, then the
minimum steel areas (0.8% B D)are to be based on concrete
area required to resist the direct stress, and not on the
actual area of concrete columns.

In foundation design, while we do the base pressure check, we normally check if the attained pressure value is less than the GROSS BEARING CAPACITY of the soil which is the sum of net bearing capacity of soil and the overburden pressure. Actually, the overburden pressure acts against the net bearing capacity of the soil and I feel that we are actually increasing the bearing capacity value and doing the check. I feel that this is NOT right. Please clarify on this.
